A Look At The New Ford Puma

Launched late in 2019, the Ford Puma has gone from a sporty compact to an SUV Crossover and it’s done it with ease. The original Puma was a fantastic car for those who wanted sporty looks and handling, without a huge engine and the costs that come with it.

And whilst the new Ford Puma is an SUV cross, the same sentiment can be shared as Ford have launched the car with three engine options… all of the 1 litre petrol variety. But Ford have been clever as two of these options are what they are calling mHEV’s, Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

The Ford Puma is on sale now.

There is a 125ps petrol, a 125ps mHEV and a 155 mHEV. All of these options will take you towards or beyond 50mpg and all of them are surprisingly nippy to drive.

The 1.0 Petrol engine offers a reasonable 0-62 of 9.8 seconds whilst the 155ps mHEV will improve on that and get you there in 8.5 seconds. And as they are turbo charged engines, you get the benefit of that power further up the revs which gives the feeling that the car has a lot more pull than you would expect in an SUV Cross with just three cylinders.

The Ford Puma mHEV?

Yes, the Ford Puma is a hybrid SUV at priced from just £19,795! Building on Ford’s award winning EcoBoost 1.0 petrol engines, and adding to their growing lineup of electric and hybrid cars, the mHEV are mild hybrids which means they have a small 48 volt battery which charges whilst the car is driving using regenerative braking technology, to then offer additional torque through a small electric motor.

This motor will kick in when you take off from standstill to reduce load on the engine and improve acceleration. And it will also switch the engine off when you brake the car at low speeds, when you slow towards a junction, maintaining power to the brakes and steering. Slip the car into gear and the petrol engine will turn back on ready for you to take off again.

This combination of a small three cylinder turbo powered petrol engine and “mild” hybrid system and motor provide a driving experience that feels a lot “bigger”.

What Else Is New?

Ford haven’t stopped with the engines when it comes to new features in the Puma. These cars are packed with new ideas and technologies that have seen the Puma garner a host of 5/5 reviews and the WhatCar Car of the Year Overall Winner Award!

In terms of styling, the car has won plaudits for its looks, with a sleek sporty profile which sets it apart from its rivals, such as the VW T-Roc. And the Puma comes packed with features across all models.

Inside the 2020 Ford Puma.

The “entry-level” Titanium edition features 17 inch allow wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, climate control and cruise as standard. The ST Line level up gains a sportier body kit, a digital instrument cluster but loses climate control in favour of air con.

And at the top end is the ST Line X which sees you gain bigger alloys, tinted windows, part leather and an upgraded sound system on top of what you find in the lower models.

The Puma's Technology and Innovation

Other impressive features available include a host of new technologies from Ford that add to driver comfort, convenience and safety. Amongst the Driving Experience features available are:

Co-Pilot 360 is a suite of driver aids which work together to offer subtle to less subtle assistance. Some come as standard in the Ford Puma, some are optional extras but from the Titanium up you get pre-collision assist with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system and lane departure warning.

To this you can add active park assist ,which manoeuvres your car into spaces with just 20% more room than the car, headlight cornering, cross traffic alerts which tells you if you are reversing out in front of anything and even traffic sing recognition that will keep you up to date with speed limits and warnings.

Inside The Puma

Inside the car you’ll find some stylish and practical innovations. The seats feature easily removable and washable covers, front and back, which you can clean in the event of a spillage or even change colours to customise the car.

The cockpit is sleek and comfortable that whilst higher due to the cars stance, feels snug and sporty. Available options include heated seats and steering wheel, 4g in-car wifi, SYNC3 bluetooth connection and phone mirroring, massage seats (Titanium only), panoramic sunroof, climate control and MyKey which allows you to set limits and restrict certain settings when you give the car to friends or family.

The Ford Puma's innovative MegaBox.

Even the boot has been designed a fresh with an extra large load space. MegaBox is a compartment in the boot that offers an extra 80 litres of space under the boot floor. The box is waterproof and has a drain and plug so you can keep dirty clothes, boots etc in their and wash it out after with ease. It also increases the maximum height available for storage to 115cm tall.

J&J Motors Ltd is an Appointed Representative of Automotive Compliance Ltd who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA No. 497010). Automotive Compliance Ltd’s permissions as a Principal Firm allows J&J Motors Ltd to act as a credit broker, not a lender, for the introduction to a limited number of lenders, and to act as an agent on behalf of the insurer for insurance distribution activities only. We are a credit broker and not a lender. We can introduce you to a carefully selected panel of lenders, which includes manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent. We act on behalf of the lender for this introduction and not as your agent. We are not impartial, and we are not an independent financial advisor. Our approach is to introduce you first to the manufacturer lender linked directly to the particular franchise you are purchasing your vehicle from, who are usually able to offer the best available package for you, taking into account both interest rates and other contributions. If they are unable to make you an offer of finance, we then seek to introduce you to whichever of the other lenders on our panel is able to make the next most suitable offer of finance for you. Our aim is to secure a suitable finance agreement for you that enables you to achieve your financial objectives. If you purchase a vehicle, in the majority of cases, we will receive a commission from your lender for introducing you to them which is either a fixed fee, or a fixed percentage of the amount that you borrow. This may be linked to the vehicle model you purchase. Different lenders pay different commissions for such introductions, and manufacturer lenders linked directly to the franchises that we represent may also provide preferential rates to us for the funding of our vehicle stock and also provide financial support for our training and marketing. But any such amounts they and other lenders pay us will not affect the amounts you pay under your finance agreement; however, you will be contributing towards the commission paid to us with the interest collected on your repayments. Before we propose you to a potential lender, we will inform you of the likely amount of commission we will receive and seek your consent to receive this commission. The exact amount of commission that we will receive will be confirmed prior to you signing your finance agreement. All finance applications are subject to status, terms and conditions apply, UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
